Indicator 3: People Arrested
TCADA reports that the Texas Department of Public Safety collects data on
arrests for alcohol, drug, and violent crimes committed in Texas. DWI, liquor
law violations, drug possession, and other related violations are recorded
for the Texas population at large by county. Travis County did not include
Austin Police Department figures in 1995 and 1996 since Austin Police Department
used a new reporting system for those two years. Yet, since 1997 Austin Police
Department joined the Uniform Crime Reporting system again and their figures
were included in Travis County (TCADA).
Findings (TCADA)
- All drug offenses continue to increase.
- Public intoxication increased significantly from 1997 to 1998 and then
decreased in 1999.
- DWIs arrests continue to increase each year. However, between 1998 and
1999 the increase has slowed.
