The 14th Annual Dragon Boat Festival and Races
are coming soon in Austin! Watch these 40-foot long boats re-create
a more than two thousand year old Chinese tradition on the water of Austin's
beautiful Lady Bird Lake. 19 Teams from Samsung, Dell, HEB, Foster
Quan Law Office, the Travis County Sheriff's Office, 3M, UT Student Clubs
and many others, including out of town teams from Houston and Dallas will
battle it out during a day of fun, excitement, and camaraderie.
In addition to the races, this family-friendly,
multicultural event offers music and dance performances, martial arts demonstrations
and a 'Kids Zone' with special activities for children. Traditional
foods for the Festival will be available and part of the food sales will
be donated to help prevent breast cancer.
A wellness center will be setup to offer services
and treatments of holistic approaches. Vendor booths with unique
gifts from the East are also available at the Festival. Public education
booths from the Austin Police, Fire Department, EMS and nonprofit organizations
will distribute useful information to the attendees.
Dragon Boat racing has grown from its
origins in ancient China, and is now an international sport. We are
most delighted to announce that the Consul General of the People's Republic
of China, the Honorable Madam Xu Erwen has accepted our invitation and
will travel from Houston to officiate at our opening ceremony. The
ceremony will begin at around 10:15 a.m.
This is the 'Year of the Water Dragon' and
the festival promises to be our most exciting yet. The Festival and
Races are a project of the Asian American Community Partnership and the
Asian American Cultural Center. It is our mission to promote the
sharing of cultures between East and West. The Dragon Boat Festival
is partially supported by the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin.
