Awareness to Action:
Advancing Solutions for Men of Color in Higher Education
The University of Texas at Austin 26th Annual Heman Sweatt Symposium on Civil Rights, themed, "Awareness to Action: Advancing Solutions for Men of Color in Higher Education," will open on Wednesday, February 8, 5 p.m., in John Hargis Hall, 1823 Red River Street. The symposium is sponsored by the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement with support from colleges, schools and organizations across campus. All events are free and open to the public.
A 2010 report published by the College Board Advocacy and Policy Center has generated a growing focus on males underrepresented in institutions of higher education and the obstacles that males of color encounter as they navigate the education system in the United States. In response to the report, this years symposium will provide a forum for discussion of issues related to the education of young men of color including the latest research and best practices.
