Improvements proposed for IH-35 Roadway through Central Austin

Seeking public input on the IH-35 Corridor Development Program

The City of Austin is working with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and other transportation agencies to improve the region's most important transportation corridor with innovative approaches. The improvements sought for the area from US 290 E. to William Cannon Drive will identify short (3 years), medium (4-6 years) and long (7+ years) term improvements for IH-35, to be accomplished by multi-jurisdictional partnerships. Residents throughout the region are invited to participate in this effort to define a program of affordable and effective improvements to mobility, safety, and quality of life.

An open house seeking comment on initial improvement ideas for the IH-35 Corridor Development Program is scheduled:

"The IH-35 corridor program is focused on defining a number of simple and innovative mobility projects, of which the combined impact can be greater than larger, more expensive projects," said Rob Spillar, Director of the Austin Transportation Department. "Many simple but effective solutions can be relatively inexpensive but require jurisdictional cooperation to implement. Working with TXDOT, our efforts will improve mobility and safety on IH-35 in the foreseeable future."

The IH-35 Corridor Development Program complements the City's other travel improvement projects along major routes including:

• Airport Boulevard: N. Lamar to SH 71
• North Lamar Boulevard and Burnet Road: N. Lamar: US Hwy 183 to IH-35; Burnet: Koenig Ln. to MoPac
• FM 969 (East MLK, Jr. Blvd.): US Hwy 183 to Village of Webberville
• East Riverside Drive: IH-35 to SH 71

The Mobility Corridor Development projects are among many funded by the City of Austin's 2010 Mobility Bond Program, approved by voters November 2010. This development effort is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2012. Projects that emerge from the Corridor Program will be reviewed for future funding opportunities.
