"Eating Disorders and Addictions: Incidence, Treatment and Outcome"
Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses that occur in approximately 5% of the population and have many characteristics that are similar to alcohol and drug abuse. A number of factors are important to consider when working with these individuals including: 1) alcohol and drug abuse occur at higher than expected rates in both males and females with eating disorders 2) treatment providers may see eating disorder symptoms return and/or increase when these individuals with both diagnosis seek treatment for alcohol and drug abuse alone, and 3) the need to address both illnesses simultaneously in patients with both ED and CD. This presentation will focus on the evaluation and treatment of subgroups of eating disorder patients at high risk for alcohol and drug abuse.
