Participate in free financial fitness class, housing fair during Community Development Week Residents can learn “Five Steps of Financial Recovery after a Layoff” and find out about housing resources by participating in free events during Community Development Week, April 25-30. Community Development Week recognizes programs that provide local governments with resources to meet the needs of vulnerable populations, including residents with low income or disabilities. Programs funded through Community Development Block Grant or the HOME Investment Partnerships Program invigorate the local economy through affordable housing, job creation and retention, and community revitalization. Next week’s activities include a one-day course on financial fitness geared for those who have been laid off or are at risk of being laid off to assess and learn to manage their finances. The same course, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, will be offered April 27 at 1000 E. 11th St., Room 400A; and April 28 at Goodwill Industries of Central Texas, 1015 Norwood Park Blvd. The morning program will cover how to assess and manage your financial situation; putting your spending in order; and how to communicate with creditors to protect your credit history. The afternoon session will cover how to avoid getting further into debt and resources available and how to use them. Budget counseling will be available after the class. Class size is limited and registration is first-come, first-served. To sign-up, call (512) 974-6001 or email janice.kinchion@ci.austin.tx.us with your name, phone number, email address and which class day you would like to attend. Lunch and day care are not provided. Also, a free Housing Fair focusing on housing rights and resources will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 30 at the Austin Tenants’ Council facility, 1640-B E. Second St. Topics will include fair housing protections, tenant-landlord laws, affordable housing resources and homebuyer guides. There will be refreshments and activities for children. To request an accommodation, call (512) 474-7007 or visit housing-rights.org. The fair is sponsored by the Tenants’ Council and other community groups.
