Cultural Competency: Working with Veterans
Location: Mexican American Cultural Center (600 River St.)
Dear Interested Party:
This presentation was developed with the assistance of combat veterans ranging from World War II to the present war in Iraq and Afghanistan. With their invaluable contributions, participants will learn what community support looks like through their eyes.
The first hour of the presentation will highlight useful knowledge about the military culture, including a crash course in military language, differences between past and present theaters of operation, the impact of combat deployments, and the journey of re-entry into civilian life. The second half of the presentation will focus on learning how to identify their needs, create a safe environment, and make appropriate referrals. Finally, practical tools and resources will be distributed that providers can use to promote a stronger alliance with service members and their families.
Our hope is that with education and guidance from the experts (veterans), a win-win situation will emerge, in that communities will augment their quality of care, and veterans and their families will become more open to receiving our support at a time when they need it most.
Please join us for this training. Free CEU's.
