Child Care Task Force Report: Ambassadors
for Children
Introduction
In February, 1998, the Austin City Council passed a resolution asking the
Austin Child Care Council (CCC), a citizen advisory board on child care issues
established by the City Council, to develop recommendations addressing the
accessibility, affordability and quality of child care. The CCC's report,
presented to the City Council in August 1998, was the basis for establishing
the Community Action Network's Child Care Task Force and provided the background
on which its work is based. The Executive Summary from that report is repeated
in the following section to put the work of the Task Force into context. The
charge to the Task Force was to organize and define ways to achieve the recommendations
outlined in the CCC report and begin implementation. The Task Force included
a broad-based membership that is representative of the many facets of the
community.
The remainder of this report describes the Community Action Network Task
Force Committees and presents the Task Force recommendations including a detailed
outline of plans and actions taken for establishing a Children's Fund to meet
the community's child care needs. A further comprehensive assessment of the
Early Education and Care Needs of children will be published in January 2000
by the Community Action Network.
